• Paying the franchise tax online costs $5 more. The state adds a $5.00 card processing fee online and none by mail. So $150 becomes $155.

1. File your Certificate of Organization with the Secretary of State. The fee is $50. That comes from the LLC fee schedule issued under Act 1041 of 2021, the same act that carries the registered agent duty. The office now quotes 3 to 5 business days for every route, online included.
2. Apply for your EIN from the IRS. It is free. The Secretary of State says to do this after your entity comes back, not before.
3. Open a business bank account with the EIN and your filed certificate. Keep the money separate. That habit is what protects the liability shield.
4. Put May 1 on your calendar, and March 20 beside it. No form by March 20 means you must ask for one in writing. The $150 falls due either way.
5. Register with the Department of Finance and Administration if you sell taxable goods. Rates vary by city and county. Look yours up by address.
6. Turn on your agent's alerts. Log in and check that email and text are active. Service of process is the thing that really arrives through an agent, and it arrives with no warning.
