Learn moreSBA Microloan Program

Get Grant-Ready
Before you apply, most Ohio grant programs expect these basics to be in place.
Form your business entity
Most Ohio grant programs require applicants to be a registered LLC, corporation, or nonprofit. If you haven't formed yet, that's the first step.
$39 + state fee. Includes registered agent, business address, and more.
Get your EIN
An Employer Identification Number is free from the IRS and required on nearly every grant application. You can apply online and receive it immediately.
Open a business bank account
Grant funds need to go into a dedicated business account, not your personal checking. Most agencies will ask for your banking details on the application.
Mercury is a fintech company, not an FDIC-insured bank. Banking services provided through Choice Financial Group and Column N.A., Members FDIC.
Grants by Business Type
Targeted programs for specific business owners in Ohio.
Minority-owned Business Grants
Minority ownership counts in your favor on the JobsOhio Small Business Grant. That grant absorbed the old Inclusion Grant. Ohio also lends. The Minority Business Direct Loan starts at $45,000 and wants three years of trading, and it needs MBE certification.

Women-owned Business Grants
Ohio runs WBE certification through the Department of Administrative Services. It opens state procurement set asides. There is a loan too. The Women's Business Enterprise Loan runs $45,000 to $500,000. Certification helps but is not required, if you can show 51 percent ownership and control.

Veteran-owned Business Grants
Ohio's Veteran-Friendly Business Enterprise status gives bonus points on state contracts. There is no veteran-only grant here. Veteran ownership does count inside the JobsOhio Small Business Grant. That is where the Inclusion Grant money went.

Rural Business Grants
Rural Ohio has one live route to real money. The JobsOhio Revitalization Program funds brownfield sites, and it wants 20 jobs and site control. The Microbusiness Development Program is not one you apply to. Its money goes to nonprofit partner sites, which then run free training and advice near you. The USDA Rural Business Development Grant shut its 2026 windows on June 30.

Tips for Applying in Ohio
Increase your chances of approval with these state-specific tips.
- 1Register with the Ohio Secretary of State before you apply anywhere. Most state programs want an active Ohio registration on file.
- 2Check the JobsOhio revenue rule first. You need $100,000 to $25 million a year, plus a year of trading. Most of your sales must go to other businesses, not to consumers.
- 3Call your regional JobsOhio partner before you fill in anything. Ohio has seven. They point you at the right program and help with the paperwork.
- 4Book time with your local Ohio SBDC. It is free. They handle the projections, the business plan, and the loan packaging that grant files ask for.
- 5Get certified if you qualify. MBE, WBE, VFBE, and EDGE status comes from the Ohio Department of Administrative Services. It opens contracts and widens what you can apply for.
- 6Get your paperwork ready first. JobsOhio pays by reimbursement. Expect to show registration, tax returns, financial statements, and proof you paid for the thing.

Not today. The next application period runs October 1 to 30, 2026. We read that at techcred.ohio.gov on August 26, 2026, on a page the agency stamped August 12. One application per employer, keyed to your FEIN. You get back up to $1,000 per employee per credential, up to $30,000 for the period. Training has to start on or after October 1 and finish within a year. The old $2,000 figure is gone. Ohio halved it under a new framework.
No. There is no application form. JobsOhio runs seven regional network partners, and you contact the one covering your county. They vet the project first. JobsOhio then scores it on jobs created, payroll, and fixed asset spend. Its own guidelines say meeting the criteria does not guarantee support. Retail, entertainment, and other consumer facing businesses are ruled out.
Yes, but read the fine print. Ohio TechCred is the open one. It reimburses training, and the window is short. The JobsOhio grants are real money too. But you do not fill in a form. A regional partner takes your project to JobsOhio, and JobsOhio decides. Meeting the published rules does not get you an award.
The JobsOhio Small Business Grant. It pays up to $50,000 back on approved spending. You need a year of trading and revenue of $100,000 to $25 million. Most of that revenue must come from selling to other businesses. The project also has to lift your payroll or headcount by at least 10 percent. That last rule stops a lot of applicants.
JobsOhio folded it into the Small Business Grant. The old name still shows up on other grant lists. It is gone from the JobsOhio site. Apply for the Small Business Grant instead. Minority, women, veteran, and disability ownership still count in your favor.
There is no fixed window. JobsOhio takes projects all year through its seven regional partners. The money then arrives as reimbursement. You spend first, send proof of payment, and get paid after. Budget for that gap. It is the part founders miss.
Not for the JobsOhio grants. Those take any Ohio business that clears the revenue and industry rules. Certification matters elsewhere. MBE, WBE, EDGE, and VFBE status opens state contracting set asides. You get it from the Ohio Department of Administrative Services.
