Before you apply, most New Jersey grant programs expect these basics to be in place.

Get your EIN

Grants by Business Type
Targeted programs for specific business owners in New Jersey.
Women-owned Business Grants
The bonus routes are shut for now. The NJ Manufacturing Voucher Program paid certified woman owned manufacturers a higher award percentage, and NJEDA has closed all three phases. The NJEDA Small Business Fund is financing rather than a grant, so it comes with repayment. Check both at NJEDA before you plan around either.

Minority-owned Business Grants
Same story here. The NJ Manufacturing Voucher Program carried the minority owned bonus and it is closed. CSIT seed rounds have prioritised minority founders before, and the current clean tech round closed in July 2025. The Disadvantaged Business Enterprise Supportive Services Program offers training and technical help, not money.

Veteran-owned Business Grants
One route, and it is closed. Certified veteran owned manufacturers with under 100 employees drew a higher award percentage from the NJ Manufacturing Voucher Program. NJEDA has closed every phase of that programme. Nothing else on the state list carries a veteran specific bonus today.

Technology/Innovation Business Grants
This is usually where New Jersey has most to offer. CSIT runs the Clean Tech Seed Grant and the Catalyst Seed R&D Grant for early stage companies. Both run in rounds. Clean tech round 4 closed in July 2025 and no new round has been announced. The NJ Entrepreneur Support Program guarantees loans rather than handing out money, so watch CSIT for the next call.

Tips for Applying in New Jersey
Increase your chances of approval with these state-specific tips.
- 1Get a Tax Clearance Certificate first. You request it through the State of New Jersey Premier Business Services portal, under Tax Services. Nothing moves without it.
- 2Register on the NJEDA portal at programs.njeda.com before you start. Do it early. Creating the account is not the application, and the two get conflated.
- 3Check the programme page on the day you apply. Funding runs out without notice. NJEDA shut two of the grants on this page that way. The status line at the top of each NJEDA programme page is the thing to trust.
- 4Stay in good standing with the NJ Department of Labor and the Department of Environmental Protection. Both get checked. An open matter with either one will hold up an approval.
- 5Call NJEDA Customer Care on 844-965-1125 before you apply, or your local NJSBDC office. Both are free. Ten minutes on the phone beats a rejected application.

Yes, but fewer than you would hope. The Main Street Acquisition Support Grant is the one still taking applications. It reimburses up to $50,000 of the closing costs on a commercial property you bought to trade from. NJEDA confirmed it was open on August 26, 2026. The two better known ones are shut. Both the Small Business Improvement Grant and the Small Business Lease Grant are fully subscribed, and NJEDA is not accepting new applications for either.
The Small Business Improvement Grant, and that is the problem. It was the workhorse. It paid back half the cost of building work, furniture, fixtures and equipment, up to $50,000 an award. Demand ate it. The NJEDA programme page now says funding is fully subscribed and the agency is no longer accepting new applications. We read that on August 26, 2026. If a blog post tells you to apply, it is out of date.
No. NJEDA programmes are open to any eligible small business, whoever owns it. Certification changes the size of an award rather than your right to apply. The NJ Manufacturing Voucher Program pays a higher percentage to certified woman, minority and veteran owned firms. That programme is closed to new applications. So certification is worth having for a future round, not for getting through a door today.
Months, not weeks. NJEDA has reported roughly eight months from application on the Small Business Improvement Grant, and the Lease Grant carried a backlog too. Both are closed now, so the timeline that matters is the Main Street Acquisition Support Grant. NJEDA publishes no processing time for it. Plan for a wait. Keep your Tax Clearance Certificate current and your paperwork complete, because incomplete files are what stretch a queue.
